An Actual Game!

June 1st, 2009

Webmaster Larry and I threw down over two days last week. If you recall the first game we played back in 2008 then you remember that I accidently cheated by bringing more points than Larry and we played to a draw. In this last epic, two-day struggle it was Larry who cheated (accidently he alleges) when he gave one of his Tomb Spyders a particle whip. He mumbled something about confusing the particle PROJECTOR with the particle WHIP. He blasted one troop squad down to four models and vaped my Predator and generally did a bunch of damage, and we did not discover his error until the game was nearly over. He was also taking armor saves, with the same Tomb Spyder, against my powerfist Terminators, something I should have caught, but did not.

Anyway, (alleged) cheating aside I managed to claim one objective and, since he forgot to move his intact, and unthreatened, warrior squad from around a building on to an objective, the other two remained unclaimed. In his defence Larry thought the game lasted 7 turns instead of the 6, like I thought, so when I announced that the game ended, and that I had won, he said that he was planning to move them next turn. Well, after reading some “rules” in the “rule book” we found out that I was incorrect and we should have been rolling for game length starting on turn 5. But see, whereas Larry was cheating, I just forgot (allegedly).

Great fun was had by all, even though there was much cursing and throwing of things when Larry could do nothing to hurt my Terminators and failed many we’ll-be-back rolls. HA HA!

So, this being my SECOND GAME EVER, I suddenly was devious enough to make that minute difference in my gear AND smart enough to sneak some armor saves pass a guy who lives and breathes WH? Allegedly, I am pretty smart… : D Nah, all was fun, except for those unstoppable (and very distracting) Terminators. If one of my scarabs had not succeeded in giving one a hangnail, which got infected, thus killing the Termie – I would have never even scratched their armor. I probably hit them 60 times and got that one hangnail…

I’ve been playing 40k for a long, long time now, and one day I’ll get through an entire game and not realise afterwards that I got one or more rules wrong. But it hasn’t happened yet :)

    Rules. Bah.

It’s even harder trying to play 40k after a long time while learning to play Warmachine.

My trouble is trying not to mix up rules from the previous 3 editions that I played! I remember when 3rd edition first came out, I was using the strength of a Plasma Pistol in close combat, because that’s the way it used to be!

Yep, the edition-mix-up is all too common… Been there from 2nd Ed till now and still like the “old” Rules quite a bit more than the new ones. But hey, time goes on…
In the old days, my Warpcannons used to make quite a mess of these Terminators, Traitors or Imperial Servants the like!

I find it difficult to convince myself that you both managed to confuse the Projector with the Whip… :-P

I dunno, seeing as the “projector” doesn’t actually get its own weapon entry, but shoots as a Staff of Light, all of which is only laid down in a tiny blurb under the unit description, I can understand someone new looking at the Weapons Chart, and Unit Chart, and assuming that “Particle Whip” must be what is meant. Still funny as hell though, especially the armor save bit.

Ha ha ha! Glad you had fun. That’s the only reason to play these games after all.
Love the comedy of errors too.

Yeah, Necrons have a *+@#% of a time killing Terminators, or anything else with a 2+ save unless they have a unit or two of Heavy Destroyers, which I would say are a far better choice than Tomb Spyders personally.

    Hehe.

Necrons are lame in close combat. You take a squad of assault terminators, deep strike and them you massacre all necron warriors. With their 1 atack and initiative 1 they cannot hope to win the combat, or to run away. After you wipeout all necro units, they just phase out and the game is over :)
