Sons of Dagon (AKA 'the fishmen')

Postby dont_panic » Thu Dec 14, 2006 9:35 pm

I created a great background for my army with a super chapter name, and fluff, and then the first guy who saw it points and said, "Look! Fishmen!" and it was game over.

I don't know how many H.P. Lovecraft fans are out there, but this is a Cthulhu inspired Chaos Space Marine army. Specifically, the tentacly, aquatic fish god Dagon. If you have no idea what I'm talking about, see this movie [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0264508/] or read The Shadow Over Innsmouth which is a short story and a very quick read.

Every model in this army is converted with Chaos Mutations. (except 1 dude I forgot to do. Oops!). Fish feet, tentacle arms, fish heads....See how many you can spot!

One quick anecdote.... this might look like a decent Chaos Marine army. Do not be fooled, it's not. I get my tail kicked every time I play these guys. :D Maybe they're too cute - I don't know. After a tournament a group of us all went out to dinner, and my opponents had the waitress bring me tartar sauce!

On with the pics:
This is the whole army on my display board. Yes, that's fake coral in the background.

This is Dagon, my daemon prince. AKA George.
http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p220 ... 0_1523.jpg

This is my Terminator squad. AKA the Deep Ones. Gotta love the fins on their shoulders - they're supposed to be mutated spike racks. The GW bitz guy thought I was insane when I ordered 16 pairs of Black Dragon head fins!
http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p220 ... 0_1522.jpg

This is my Havoc squad. I modeled the tentacles with green stuff as another mutation.
http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p220 ... 0_1521.jpg

This is one of my 4 troop squads. I used tau heads for the leaders' fish heads to try and make them look smarter than the troops.
http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p220 ... 0_1517.jpg

This dude's my personal favorite. The scared fish guy. He took on a DP one-on-one one time ... and got smeared.
http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p220 ... 0_1520.jpg

Here are my rhino transports before the battle....
http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p220 ... 0_1524.jpg

...and after.... (I figure if it's going to die it might as well look good).
http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p220 ... 0_1525.jpg

Last but not least, the Defiler.
http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p220 ... 1516-1.jpg

So that's the Sons of Dagon. Took about 3 months to build and paint, but that was mostly building because I paint pretty fast. If you look close, you can see all the places I forgot to do highlighting. :) But I have fun playing them, and most people seem to have fun looking at them.... Enjoy!

Very cool concept dude, as an expansion have you thought of adding a LOTD army, using the creature from the blck lagoon as a base :p

Very nice army.
Good theme, and excellent execution of your idea.
Very well painted, too.
Good Job!
You may not see us
But we'll be there
You may not feel us
But you will care

Your shots will not hit us
We are shapes in the mists
Blink and you'll miss us
For we are the Ghost Fists!

No, but I did play in a team tournament with a LOTD army once. Does that count? :)

Those are some really nice conversions! And I love the "Under the Sea" theme.

That's a good idea - really wish I had thought of it! I retired these guys from tournament play earlier this year or I would go back and do it!

Now I'm working on lava-themed Relictors... (fight fire with fire!). I'll post some pics of those sometime when I have more time.

Not a lot of green stuff - only on the daemon prince. However, I did go thru 5 chaos mutation sprues, and I have 12 WHFB Kroxigors with no feet. :)

Sure - IM me some time - I love to chat about painting! Gives me something to do at work! LOL!

I cheated. It's a Reaper miniatures Well of Doom with a Dragon Ogre Shaggoth glued on top. Then I did green stuff from the well up to the torso and put little suction cups all over it. The arms and head fins are from a black dragon. So it's still tourney legal cause it's still about 75% GW stuff. Weighs about 12 oz, too. *clonk*

Haha you dirty rotten kit-basher! I'm just kidding , absolutely wonderful stuff. I'm sure you could get further inspiration from the new Pirates of the carribean movies... and octopus faced guy would be killer!

If I had a dollar for every time that was really, really, really cool...

I would have like 12 dollars. And I would buy myself a blister pack of cadian officers. Or maybe some more catachan green. Or a new hobby knife. Or a new fine detail brush. Or green stuff. Or some more flock. Or some new dice. Or green ink. Or...wha? Oh right. the army.

Very nice. Overall effect is very cool, and the wrecked rhino is a nice touch. I really love the fins and bases. Subtle, but effective.
